Re:Endurance Training - 2009/10/08 14:35
The way I was taught, deep tissue massage (often referred to incorrectly as Sports Massage) should NOT be given to athletes 24-48 hours before or after an event.
This is for several reasons, the main one that people often overlook is "muscle memory". Deep work can effectively "reprogramme" how a muscle is working and so, for instance, a cyclist may lose cadence.
As examples I had a triathlete who saw me fortnightly on a Thursday for leg massage, as Friday was his rest day. If I treated him on any other day the next day he had a poor quality performance.
Another State-level swimmer worked his body recovery out to 35 hours, so I couldn't work on him within this period before an event because if I did he lost stroke co-ordination.
10 minutes of light strokes to warm up / relax down at events is fine; just avoid deep work.
