Video textReflexology, sometimes called zone therapy, was founded in 1913 by Dr William Fitzgerald, an American ear, nose and throat surgeon. He divided the body into several zones and suggested that every aspect of the human body appears in one of these zones. The right side of the body is believed to be reflected in the right foot, and the left side, in the left foot.
In the 1930s, Eunice Ingham, a nurse and physiotherapist, developed the method to include specific reflex points.
Reflexology aims to relieve stress or treat health conditions through light, but firm, pressure on the foot with the thumb and forefinger. No creams, oils, or lotions are used. Stimulation of the zones and reflex points can unblock and increase the flow of vital energy to various parts of the body. It can also include the release of endorphins, stimulation of nerve circuits, promotion of lymphatic flow or the dissolving of uric acid crystals.
Reactions to the first treatment can appear in forms of increased bowel movements, cold type symptoms or skin problems. This is a very healthy sign which tells you that the treatment has encouraged the release of harmful toxins from the body.
It’s suggested that reflexology may reduce allergy symptoms, stress, back pain, high blood pressure, chronic fatique and fibromyalgia.
Reflexology should not be used if the patient is pregnant, has diabetes or a heart problem. People with recent fractures, osteoarthritis affecting the ankle or foot or severe circulation problems in the legs or feet should avoid reflexology.
